Release date: February 5, 2011, Pickering-Ajax, ON

kisses for haley - haley stewartWhen Jennifer Spalton, 2nd year York University student and member of the Bachelor of Environmental Studies Students Association (BESSA) first discovered through a FaceBook post that little Haley Stewart of Mississauga desperately needed to raise some serious money to fund her life saving brain surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for a Dural AVM, she immediately knew that she had to do whatever she could to assist. She assembled other BESSA students and partnered with the Neuroscience Club at York to facilitate a first ever, collaborative fundraising event to rock the house, raise funds and awareness for Dural AVM.

The rocking fundraising concert event will be held at the Founders Assembly Hall at York University, Keele Campus, 4700 Keele St. Toronto on Thursday Feb 10, 2011 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. With a goal of pre-selling 300 tickets, the team has dedicated their lunches, spares and free time to making that happen.  Local rock and alternative bands and other performing acts quickly jumped on the bandwagon in support of the event, that will feature appearances from: Elos Arma, The Compound, Retrofellaz dance Crew, Nu Projections from YorkU and “Aaron and Giselle”.  Thanks to corporate sponsors David Moore Inc., YorkU bookstore, Aramark Catering, and Zteca Burritos, the event will also include burritos, appetizers, coffee, mini desserts, fruit, veggies and other tasty munchies. The event team is also hosting a special Raffle Draw with prizes of 2 Raptors tickets (100 level seats for Feb 13 game at 6pm, Raptors vs. LA Clippers) and two $25 YorkU Bookstore Gift cards, just in time for Valentine’s Day gift giving.  The cost of raffle tickets is $3 each or 2 for $5 and may be purchased any time prior to or at the event, while tickets to the rocking fundraising event can be pre-purchased for $10 each which includes free food!!

The full 100% of the profits raised from this rocking event will be donated to the Mayo Clinic’s Dural AVM fund in honour of  Haley Stewart, a local 10 year old girl who was diagnosed with Dural arteriovenous fistulas/malformation (DAMV). While surgery for child DAMV is currently not available in Canada, the Mayo Clinic in the USA has a team of 50 neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons and pediatric surgeons who all specialize in brain avms. Dural arteriovenous fistulas are uncommon and treatment is complicated however “the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota is a world leader in the diagnosis and treatment of DAMV and is ranked among the Best Hospitals for Neurology, Neurosurgery and Ophthalmology care by U.S. News & World Report.” More information on Haley and her condition may be found at: http://KissesForHaley.com.

The YorkU Rocking Kisses for Haley fundraising event is currently being promoted throughout the university, on FaceBook and by the students themselves.
